The History of this Long Serving Newcastle Business
Peter McDonald Automotive Services Pty Ltd (as it was called) was established in 1970 by Peter and his wife, Jennifer. In the beginning, PMAS concentrated on the general maintenance of vehicles and the fitting of parts. Shortly thereafter, a need for specialist engine fitting became apparent. As did the need for reconditioning, fitting and supplying power steering boxes, shafts and conversions. A practice that is still adhered to today and one that is, what PMAS and many in the industry believe, to be the best in Newcastle and
the Hunter region.
Engine fitting became the most important aspect of the business. With the turnover of engines, both reconditioned and imported, PMAS soon became specialists in engine reconditioning and fitting. PMAS has always had a strong work ethos and this has enabled the company to establish a sterling reputation for quality workmanship and products. Peter’s motto is ‘at the end of the day, all you have is your reputation’. This motto has been backed up throughout the history of the company and into the present and the future, not only with words, but in action and written warranties.
In December 2014, Peter made the decision to retire. His son, Chris McDonald, has now taken off where Peter left. He comes to the business with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the mechanical industry. From an early age, he was in the workshop as often as possible, dismantling power steering boxes and cleaning parts ready for reassembly, always watching and learning from the best in the business. Following several years in the 4wd repairs and spares industry, he spent ten years in a management role within the largest Toyota Service Department in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. The training and experience provided in these roles has entrenched the desire to give the best possible customer service and satisfaction along with quality workmanship and quality control within the industry.
